Does Invisalign Hurt?

This is one of our most frequently asked questions. In truth, while Invisalign is designed to be more comfortable than metal braces, there will be some level of soreness and adjustment as you begin and progress through your treatment.

So you’ve decided to get Invisalign for your teeth. Congratulations! You’re one step closer to having straighter, healthier teeth and a more confident smile. Now that you’re ready to take the next steps, we’ll walk you through the Invisalign process at Clover—from how Invisalign works to what to expect with your office visits. Hopefully we’ll be able to answer some of your most pressing questions or concerns.

Thanks to modern orthodontics, we now have more teeth straightening options than ever before. There are traditional braces, which now come in metal, ceramic, and behind the teeth, and then there are clear aligners like Invisalign. While both braces and Invisalign are extremely effective at targeting teeth misalignment and overbite—depending on your orthodontist, of course—they’re not created equal. Both have their own strengths and weaknesses or pros and cons. So which one is better, and which one is the right teeth straightening solution for you?

One of the most common questions we get in our office is whether Invisalign is safe and effective for children. Without hesitation, we say absolutely. Most children will need orthodontic care at some point, but about 1 in 5 of them (between the ages of ages 7-11) will actually require early treatment to help correct and guide how the teeth come in. For so many years, the only way to achieve lasting results was to use expanders and braces, but today, we can accomplish the same beautiful results with Invisalign.

There’s a reason why we treat so many teens with orthodontic care—quite simply put, it is the optimal time to straighten adult teeth.

Though their adult teeth have mostly all come in, a teen’s bones are still growing, which is a real advantage for us because the bones are more malleable than they are in adulthood. As the jaw continues to grow, we can work most efficiently to modify and improve the bite.

Did you know that when we smile more, we feel better? That’s not an anecdote either – it’s a fact proven by science. Great news for those of us who feel good about how our teeth look, but what about those who don’t? The answer is surprisingly complex and touches on some compelling reasons to seek care – both aesthetically and for a cluster of very important wellness outcomes.

But first, let’s talk about the concerns that most people have in seeking Invisalign when they’re well into adulthood.

When we think of straightening our teeth, the most common outcome most people focus on is the obvious value of a gorgeous smile. Being able to confidently flash those pearly whites can boost our mood and self-image, and make us more attractive to others. But too often the focus is on aesthetics and not enough on the bite, and this is where some really important health impacts come into play. At Clover, we look at the entire picture of your teeth, jaw, and palate to understand what is needed from us so you can enjoy a healthy smile that you love.

At Clover, we know that a healthy smile can change your life. There’s the obvious benefit of having a smile you love – the confidence that comes from feeling good about how you look. When you love it, you’re more likely to use it.
