Clover’s Invisalign for Teens: The #1 Choice for Ages 13-18

There’s a reason why we treat so many teens with orthodontic care—quite simply put, it is the optimal time to straighten adult teeth.

Though their adult teeth have mostly all come in, a teen’s bones are still growing, which is a real advantage for us because the bones are more malleable than they are in adulthood. As the jaw continues to grow, we can work most efficiently to modify and improve the bite.

For Teens: Invisalign Clear Aligners vs. Braces Comparison

What do they look like?

Invisalign Clear Alingers:
Clear, nearly invisible

Braces:
The most common option features metal or ceramic brackets connected by a metal wire. There’s an option to get clear or colorful rubber bands, which can be appealing for kids. There’s also an option to place the brackets at the back of the teeth, making them invisible. However, these tend to be extremely uncomfortable

How comfortable are they to wear?

Invisalign Clear Aligners:
Moving teeth can be uncomfortable, but because aligners are smooth and trimmed to your teen’s gum line for comfort, they’ll never have to worry about gum irritation or the cuts that can lead to inflammation and infection.

Braces:
Aside from the discomfort that comes from the teeth movement, wires and brackets may poke and irritate your teen’s mouth and gums, which can be painful, uncomfortable, and make a metal mouth look even more conspicuous.

How long does my teen have to wear them?

Invisalign Clear Aligners:
Your teen will need to wear them for 20-22 hours a day, and to remember to lightly rinse and put them back after every meal.

Braces:
Brackets are permanently bonded to your teen’s teeth for the full duration of treatment, 24 hours per day.
How does my teen keep it all clean?

Invisalign Clear Aligners:
Your teen will soak their trays in a cleaning solution, or scrub them gently with a toothbrush. Then they’ll brush and floss their teeth as they normally would.

Braces:
Your teen will have to learn how to brush at an angle and use a specialized floss threader. They may also need an interdental brush to clean those hard-to-reach areas.

Are there any food restrictions?

Invisalign Clear Aligners:
No restrictions since your teen can remove them during meals.

Braces:
Absolutely no hard or sticky food or candy.

What’s important to know about care?

Invisalign Clear Aligners:
Because the trays are removable, keeping your teen’s mouth clean is less of a challenge. So long as they brush and floss after eating, they’ll look great. But you may need to help your teen keep track of where they place the trays so they don’t lose them. Always keeping them in their case in a designated location helps.

Braces:
While your teen wouldn’t have to worry about losing their braces, they’ll still need to brush and floss their teeth thoroughly after every meal as brackets can be a trap for bacteria.

How fast can my teen see results?

Invisalign Clear Aligners:
Most cases range from 6-18 months, depending on complexity

How effective are they?

Invisalign Clear Aligners:
Effective even for more complex or severe cases

Will they damage my teen’s teeth?

Invisalign Clear Aligners:
Nope. Upon treatment completion, once your teen’s Invisalign attachments are removed there is no damage to their teeth or evidence of orthodontic care—other than a stellar smile, of course.

Braces:
If your teen struggles with hygiene during treatment, they may develop permanent white spots (or decalcification) around where the brackets once were. These spots do not go away on their own but can be treated with cosmetic dentistry later on.

Will my teen comply with treatment?

Invisalign Clear Aligners:
Because Invisalign is so comfortable, comparatively attractive, and effective, we find that our teen clients do comply with treatment and feel a sense of ownership over the process that makes them feel proud of their progress and pleased with the results.

Braces:
We find that while your teen may not be able to take metal brackets off themselves, there are still ways they can be noncompliant with care. If they don’t brush and floss, or they fail to wear their rubber bands properly, or they eat sticky candy that loosens their wires or brackets, your teen can slow down or impact the efficacy of treatment.
What’s post-treatment like?

Invisalign Clear Aligners:
Your teen will get a set of clear retainers that they’ll wear full time for another 3 months and then just every night thereafter.
